Mookie Betts, 31, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who is seeking his second career Most Valuable Player (MVP) award, has been named the National League’s first player of the month.

Betts was named the National League Player of the Month on Thursday, Major League Baseball announced. It’s his second career honor and first in seven years.

Betts previously won the award in 2016 with the Boston Red Sox, his first since joining the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Betts’ performance last month was overwhelming. In 28 games, he batted .455 with 11 home runs, 30 doubles, 35 RBI, 51 runs scored, a .516 OPS, and a 1.355 slugging percentage.

Betts’ performance skyrocketed, and he quickly moved from third or fourth place in the National League MVP race to a tie with Ronald Acuña Jr. (26, Atlanta Braves).

Betts also leads the National League in FWAR and wRC+, among other metrics.

If Betts wins the National League MVP award based on last month’s explosion, it would be the second time in his career and the first time in five years since 2018.
